Girl Scouts Heartland Kansas
Services
Our mission statement is: Girl Scouts builds girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. Girl Scout Youth Development is the traditional Girl Scout program as experienced by thousands of girls in our Council every year. Trained adult volunteers (troop leaders) guide girls who participate in age-level troops of 5-30 girls. Girls meet in safe environments with positive role models on a consistent basis. We strive to promote diversity. There is no other organization in Reno County that can provide this unique girl-led leadership and development experience. Community service is an integral part of our program. Troops interact with many area agencies through service projects to nursing homes, hospitals, low income families, food banks, humane societies, and much more. They provide neighborhood cleanups, holiday celebrations, patriotic and veterans’ activities, and help for our elderly. Our troops fulfill their promise to “make the world a better place”. As a pilot Council for the Pathways program, girls may experience the Girl Scout Leadership Experience through several different “pathways” (e.g., through a troop, camp, event offering, or other process). The Journeys curriculum offers a coordinated series of activities grouped around a theme. Each journey is tied to some of Girl Scouts' 15 national outcomes for girls, as defined in the Girl Scout Leadership Model. These outcomes are integral to the three leadership keys, Discover, Connect, and Take Action. In supporting girls, we are amazed at how many families we strengthen. We are finding that many women have only been adult Girl Scouts, introduced to the program as their daughters became involved. Mothers may sit along the sidelines for weeks or even years before deciding to take a role in mentoring their daughter’s troop. With the support of the Girl Scout organization, the mother receives training and experience in planning events, organization, public speaking, budgeting and reporting, taking charge, letting others lead, and offering advice to other mothers who are becoming involved. The pride and empowerment that comes from changing young girls’ lives has an impact on her life too. They use the experience to build courage, confidence and character that allows them to go back to school, change a bad relationship or job, or take control of their family’s financial situation.
Girls in Reno County have the opportunity to explore programs and events in 80 counties across Kansas. Youth Development activities are held in Reno County and many girls residing in here travel outside the area for events and learning opportunities.
